In the last week Marg and I have been watching the series Downton Abbey. The second of the series deals with the impact of the First World War on the residents - the Lords and Ladies and the servants who wait on them. There was a great divide between these two sets of people.

It has been 2 weeks since the camp. I hope that have been pondering and acting on establishing a Godly rhythm in your lives. I hope the notions of ceasing, rest before work and inking things into your calendars are persistently part of your ponderings and prayer. Margherita and I have been working particularly on how we celebrate the Lords Day.

As the Emmanuel Community commences its 40th year, it is amazing to wonder for a moment what God has brought about by calling together a people who are invited to live in an intimate relationship with their God and with one another.

How Do We Celebrate Christmas?

The feast of Christmas will be soon upon us. No doubt, we've already begun to expend energy and dollars on the preparations that are customary at this time of year. But more important than the food, the presents and the holidays is the simple question “how will I/we celebrate Christ’s coming among us?”

Easter Cannot Be Contained in Just One Day

The wonder of Christ’s resurrection cannot be contained in just one day! This is what our liturgical cycle teaches us as we enter into what we call the Octave of Easter. The Paschal mystery is not something we observe but something that we live.

The best preparation for Easter and the celebration of the Resurrection is to enter as fully as possible into the experience of Christ’s passion. It is only against this background of the passion of our Lord Jesus Christ that we gain an accurate understanding of the profound reality of his resurrection.

Congratulations to the Ignite Youth Team as they hit the ground running in 2014. While some may have been enjoying the summer vacation Ignite Youth has already seen the launch of the School of Music and the Summer Camp. Both continue to make an impact on the world of young people who are intent on being disciples of Jesus Christ.

The Christmas Encounter with Jesus

When Pope Francis declared “Christmas is the encounter with Jesus”, something inside of me responded with a loud exclamation, “this is the truth about Christmas”. In one short sentence, he cuts through all the extras that attach themselves to the Christmas season and goes right to the heart of the reason for the season.

He Took Off His Outer Garments

While much has been written about Peter’s experience of not wanting Jesus to wash his feet, there has been less written about our willingness to wash the feet of others “having taken off our outer garments”. For each of us, this reflection may bring forward something different.

I thought the last quarter of 2012 was going to be somewhat quiet. It would seem that things do not always pan out the way you expect them to.

Blessing and Testing

My time in Uganda has been both a blessing and a testing. The blessing came in the form of a meeting of leaders from across the country who had come together to hear the vision of the Catholic Fraternity. The testing came after I had checked out of my hotel in Kampala. I realised that I didn't have my passport and travel documents.

I've been in Kampala for thirty-six hours and already there have been many surprises. I was at Mass today and met a whole group of people who had been part of the leadership program we've offered over the last eight years. Walking down the street looking for somewhere to have a meal I heard someone calling my name... What are the chances?

Encounter Christ Again

This Easter, as we remember the death and resurrection of Jesus, we are challenged to rediscover that personal intimacy with Jesus Christ which can be obscured through our own blindness. Is Jesus our centre, the most important one in our lives? If not, seek him again, just like Mary Magdalene, and wait to hear him call your name.

As we celebrate Emmanuel's birthday, let's stop and remember those moments when God called us into existence. Over the last 37 years, there has been an overwhelming experience of God’s grace sustaining us and using us to build the kingdom of God. Sometimes we are only able to recognise this grace in retrospect – but life is like that at times.

Make Room for the Spirit

One of the commentaries on the Gospel that I read last Advent was insistent that we seek the Lord at every opportunity. At one level or another, we were being encouraged to make room, to open our hearts and to pursue the One who has pursued us and loved us and given us the amazing gift of his only Son...
